Storyline:
Based on the life and times of the first President of Bangladesh, ‘Bangabandhu’ Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, Mujib: The Making of a Nation, is directed by Shyam Benegal and features Arifin Shuvoo as the titular character, while Nusrat Imrose Tisha plays his wife Fazilatunnesa (Renu). The film closely follows Sheikh Mujibur Rahman’s life, how his interest in politics developed from an early age, in the presence of the stalwarts of the time: Mahatma Gandhi, Fazlul Haque and Suhrawardy. We also get to understand what inspired him to rise against the then-government, fight against Urdu imposition, create a six-point programme, and post the war for the liberation of Bangladesh in 1971, give shape to the nation.
The biggest challenge in making a biopic about a larger-than-life, charismatic personality like Sheikh Mujibur Rahman is to re-tell a known story in a way that it holds the audiences’ attention to the very end, while staying true to the facts. The screenplay, by Atul Tiwari and Shama Zaidi, keeps the story moving at a steady pace, while inserting anecdotes about his life to strike an emotional chord as well.
