Storyline:
The film starts in Mumbai’s Navjeevan Society where Neerja resides with her parents and two brothers.
Simultaneously the director also shows how a group of Libyan terrorists are getting ready to go on a mission.
Neerja is a die hard Rajesh Khanna fan and she is constantly mouthing dialogues of the superstar or singing his songs. Back from a modelling assignment, she gets to bed after dinner and requests her mother to wake her up at 1 am because she has to take the Flight No 73 to New York via Karachi and Frankfurt.
Her boyfriend (Shekhar Ravjiani) drives her to the airport. He gives her a letter and a birthday gift before seeing her off.
Neerja wants to open the letter but Shekhar makes her promise that she will only open the letter on her birthday that is September 7. The flight takes off normally. Neerja is the chief stewardess and does her due diligence. However when the flight halts at Karachi, the terrorists enter the plane. since Neerja has warned the pilots, they leave the cockpit. The terrorists therefore cannot fly the plane to Cyprus. Frustrated they take their vengeance on the passengers.
