Storyline:
Suzhal Review: A minor girl goes missing in a small town in TN and an investigation follows. Like many other investigative thrillers, this is the gist of the latest eight-part web series, Suzhal, written by Vikram Vedha director duo Pushkar and Gayatri. But what makes Suzhal astounding and different is its character arcs, the narrative and the layered conflicts that seamlessly transport the viewers into their world. There’s enough here for us to keep guessing right up until the final reveal, which is gut wrenching and threatening.
While the first four episodes are directed by Bramma of Kuttram Kadithal fame, the rest are helmed by Kirumi director Anucharan. What’s surprising is the understanding between the technicians that has actually helped provide an experience without disrupting the mood, which is of utmost importance for this genre.
The story kickstarts in a small town, Sambaloor, preparing to celebrate Mayana Kollai (looting of graveyard), a ritual that’s closely related to the worship of Goddess Angalamman. With painted faces and chariots, the devotees narrate the lives of God in the form of songs involving procession to the crematorium. While this happens, a huge cement factory in the same town gets burnt to the ground and the factory’s union leader, Shanmugam’s (Parthiban) 15-year-old daughter, Nila, also goes missing on the same day.
